The iPhone, iPad, and iPod touch do not have an infrared amplifier, so pictures cannot be captured in complete darkness. A minimal level of light is still required, which can be detected by the camera's sensors. Additionally, the preview may be delayed in exposure mode, and the camera must be kept stable during the exposure time.
